Heizer plunked 'Double Negative', 244k tons of displaced rock into a canyon in Nevada in 1969.
Virginia Dwan bought the land and gave the work to MOCA in 1984 with a condition in the contract: the museum may not conserve it. Heizer wanted weather and erosion to finish the piece.
The L.A. museum has spent forty years as steward of something it is contractually forbidden to repair. The desert is closing in at its own pace.
