In 1961 Piero Manzoni sealed ninety tins, labeled each as 30 grams of his own excrement, and priced them at their weight in gold. 'If collectors really want something intimate, really personal to the artist,' he wrote, 'there's the artist's own.'
In 2000 the Tate bought one at Sotheby's for £745 a gram, when the same weight in gold would have cost about £550. The market out-argued his joke and paid more than gold. The gallery kept the price quiet.
Pure sophistry, sealed so no one can check. He died at 29.
