Framedl 2026-09-10 1/6* Two Buddhas were cut into sandstone at Bamiyan, a religious site along the Silk Road, in the 6th century. They were destroyed with explosives in March 2001, and what's left are two empty niches in the rock. The quandary since: rebuild from the surviving fragments, or leave the holes as they are. One side says restoration returns what was taken. The other says the emptiness is the testimony now, and filling it edits the record. Twenty-five years on, the niches are still empty.
