Framedl 2026-08-31 1/6* Barnett Newman's 'Voice of Fire' is eighteen feet tall with one red band up the middle of blue, painted for the US pavilion at Expo 67 in Montreal. Pure fanfare. Canada bought it in 1990 for $1.8 million and the country spent months in a national quibble. An MP said he could paint it himself. A man in Nepean built his own version in seven hours to prove the point. The painter Charles Pachter thought the price wasn't really the issue: 'Had we bought a van Gogh, we wouldn't have heard a peep. Our country was founded by saying no to things American.' It's still hanging in Ottawa.
