Warhol began his 'Marilyn' silkscreens weeks after her death in 1962 — taking the most in-vogue face of the moment and repeating it through endless mechanical copies, the same publicity still printed until the woman became a permanent icon. He used Pop art to perpetuate a face that can never fall out of fashion now, because repetition made it eternal and empty.
