Agnes Martin painted the quintessence of peace using faint graphite grids and pale bands on six-foot squares holding almost nothing. Not empty: distilled. She said she painted happiness, innocence, beauty at their most essential. When I lived in Taos she once misdialed and called me by accident. I never got to say I was a fan. The quiet almost-connection feels right for her.
