In 1401, Florence held an open competition for the Baptistery doors. Every entrant got the same subject, the same frame, the same weight of bronze. Two panels survive, Ghiberti's and Brunelleschi's, and they hang side by side in the Bargello so you can judge for yourself.
Ghiberti won and spent the next forty-odd years on the doors. Brunelleschi lost, went to Rome, and came back with linear perspective and a plan for the dome.
The exemplary entry isn't always the one that matters the most.
