Chardin painted fruit with the seriousness other men gave to saints. Soft, velvety globes on a stone ledge, weighed and dignified. Prufrock, three centuries later, couldn't decide whether he dared eat one. Supposably it means mortality, appetite, the body's brief sweetness. Or it's fruit, and he should have just devoured it.
