For about twenty years around 1300, medieval scribes across France filled the margins of expensive devotional books with knights fighting snails. Lilian Randall counted 70 of them in 29 manuscripts. In this example, the knight has dropped his sword and gone to his knees to beg.
Nobody has settled what it means, perhaps a jab at the Lombards, a cowardice joke, or just the world turned upside down (see Rabbit of Caerbannog).
Meanwhile snails gallivant at their own speed, over anything, because the slime lets them cross a blade without a cut.
