Böcklin painted 'Isle of the Dead' five times and never explained it. It included cypresses, rock walls, and a shrouded figure rowed toward an islet that admits no one back. Asked what it meant, he said only that it was a picture to dream over. Marvelous in the old sense: wonder with dread inside it.
