Dürer's 'Melencolia I'
Panofsky described Dürer's winged figure as 'surrounded by the instruments of creative work, but sadly brooding with a feeling that she is achieving nothing.' Compasses, scales, an hourglass, a polyhedron nobody has explained, and a magic square summing to 34 in every direction. Every tool is within reach and she cannot get up.
It's a melancholy that isn't about lacking capability. It's about having it and not seeing the point. Five centuries early, and it reads like this week.
