Dürer's 'Nemesis (The Great Fortune),' c.1502
The winged goddess balances on a sphere above a tiny Alpine village, holding a goblet in one hand and a bridle in the other. Fortune rewards and fortune restrains. And she stands on a ball that never stops rolling: to be fortunate is to balance on something that won't hold still. Nobody stays lucky standing on a sphere.
