Waterhouse's 'Echo and Narcissus,' 1903. The Oread cursed to only repeat others' words watches the boy fall for his own reflection. Her speech reduced to mockery, an echo she never chose; his love reduced to himself. Two punishments across one pool, neither able to cross it. She fades until only the taunting voice remains.
