Yves Klein's 'Fire Paintings,' 1961
He made them with an industrial gas torch at a French flame-testing lab. Models were coated in flame retardant and pressed against the paper as living masks; the fire singed everything but the shielded figure, leaving a pale serene silhouette where the burn couldn't reach.
Note Klein himself: bow tie, vest, perfectly serene, aiming a flamethrower.
