Framedl 2026-08-03 3/6* Van Gogh, 'Sorrowing Old Man (At Eternity's Gate),' 1890. Painted in the asylum at Saint-Rémy near the end, from an earlier drawing of a pensioner folded into grief. He didn't depict sorrow from outside; he reached into it with fervor, the burning stroke and color doing what words couldn't. Empathy was his whole method: to paint the humblest suffering as if it were eternal.
