The Ghent Altarpiece is missing a panel. 'The Just Judges' was stolen in 1934 and never found; what hangs in the frame today is a copy, and most visitors never know they're looking at a phony.
What's left is the susurrus: ransom notes, a deathbed confession that gave nothing away, ninety years of searches and radar and theories that never quite settle. The case file has never closed.
The painting is now complete, but one-twelfth of it is a rumor based on a b&w photograph.
