Framedl 2026-10-01 1/6* Juvenal, the most scathing of Roman satirists, said that many are gripped by an incurable itch to write, known as cacoethes scribendi. In 1874, the critic Louis Leroy had it real bad. Reviewing a show of painters the Salon had turned away, he said wallpaper in its embryonic state was more finished than Monet's 'Impression, Sunrise,' and mocked the whole lot as 'Impressionists.' They kept the insult. A scathing review is sometimes how a movement gets its name.
