Ad Reinhardt spent his last decade painting five-foot black squares with a faint cross that only surfaced after you've stood there a few minutes.
Alongside them he wrote 'Twelve Rules for a New Academy': no texture, no brushwork, no sketching, no forms, no design, no colors, no light, no movement, no object. Every prohibition aimed at somebody from the gestural painters to the art market, the idea that a canvas should express a personality.
The ascetic aesthetic was the argument.
