Frida Kahlo's last painting: watermelons split to that impossible red, 'VIVA LA VIDA' cut into the flesh of the front slice. She signed it days before she died in 1954.
Watermelon is a Day of the Dead food. It's left out for the dead on the day Mexico feasts them in a jubilant celebration rather than mourning them. She wasn't defying death. She was setting the table.
Three years later, dying, Diego Rivera painted his own watermelons.
