In 1993, Rachel Whiteread filled a condemned East London terrace with concrete and removed the walls, leaving a solid cast of the air inside. Every room turned inside out: fireplaces, window recesses, the underside of the stairs.
She won the Turner Prize for it and the council demolished it the same day to create Wennington Green ‘part of a grand scheme to form green corridors connecting the heart of London to the suburbs.’
Eleven weeks total.
Tons of concrete, and the most transitory thing in London.
