Framedl 2026-07-09 1/6* Käthe Kollwitz, 'The Mothers,' from her War cycle, 1922–23. The women lock into a single sculptural mass, a wall of bodies shielding the children peering out between their skirts. These mothers refuse to let the state rescind their care or claim their sons for the next war. Kollwitz had already lost her own son Peter to the first one.
