A few years later, on a wall in the Santa Maria Novella Church, it became an affirmation when he painted a vault so exact it seemed to open a chapel into solid stone. Father, Son and Holy Spirit stacked above in the same geometry. Below, a skeleton on a tomb: 'I was once what you are, and what I am you also will be.' Masaccio died age 26. The rule he confirmed outlived him by five centuries.
