Framedl 2026-09-12 1/6* Gladiator Mosaic, first half 4th century Θ was the death mark. It turns up on Roman gladiator mosaics beside the fallen as a theta nigrum, the black theta. Here it sits next to two names, ASTIVVS and RODAN, while the men still standing have no mark at all. A whole verdict compressed into one character. The most polemical thing you could write about a person was a single letter.
