Van Gogh's 'The Good Samaritan' (after Delacroix), 1890
Vincent painted this act of empathy from inside his own suffering in the asylum at Saint-Rémy. The Samaritan strains to lift the wounded man onto the horse, the whole effort of kindness in his braced body. Far off, the men who stepped aside and passed by walk on, small and leaving. Kindness as labor: the choice to stop when everyone else kept moving.
