Framedl 2026-08-09 1/6* In 1917, marine painter Norman Wilkinson had a wild idea: don't hide the ships, dazzle them. Warships were painted in violent Cubist geometry, with clashing stripes and zigzags meant not to conceal but to scramble a U-boat's aim, making speed and heading impossible to read. It was a pure wager; no one knew if it worked. Vorticist Edward Wadsworth, who supervised the dazzling of 2,000 ships, painted them in drydock in 1919. Camouflage that hides nothing and dazzles everything.
