In a recent case, I encountered a patient presenting with persistent cough and shortness of breath. Initially, it was crucial to differentiate between potential causes such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), or even heart failure. After conducting a thorough physical examination and reviewing the patient's medical history, which included a long-term smoking habit, I proceeded with ordering a chest X-ray and spirometry. The results indicated signs consistent with COPD. Treatment was then focused on managing symptoms and slowing disease progression. This involved prescribing bronchodilators, advising on smoking cessation, and recommending a pulmonary rehabilitation program. Regular follow-ups were scheduled to monitor the patient's condition and adjust the treatment plan as necessary.
