What emerges is less a single discipline than a layering of eras. Caesar’s shift cipher still entertains puzzle enthusiasts; Shannon’s entropy fuels modern RNGs; RSA signs firmware updates; ECC secures messaging apps; lattices court a quantum future while ZKPs and FHE question whether data must ever be exposed at all. To study cryptography is to observe a cathedral under continuous renovation—older arches buttressing new spires while scaffolds of research papers climb toward yet-unbuilt heights. Its permanence is paradoxical: designed to last forever, yet constantly replaced.
