Large gas spikes typically coincide with congestion from high-frequency minting, NFT drops, MEV-arbitrage ops, or yield-hunting DeFi activity — all forms of speculation. However, gas can also surge due to legitimate on-chain demand like large-scale settlements or rollup batch operations. To assess speculative intensity, examine the share of transactions for minting/airdrops, mempool profiling, and whether the activity is concentrated in a few contracts. Persistent fee elevation driven by low-utility, high-frequency transactions is a strong sign of speculative froth.
