In 1715, John Lethbridge became the first person to develop a usable diving suit and called it a "diving machine". The suit looks like a wooden barrel, about 1.8 m long, with a diver lying inside. A window was made in the barrel through which it was possible to easily view the bottom. You had to move along the bottom with your hands: for this, the barrel had holes with oiled leather inserts. They fit tightly to the hands and did not allow water to pass through. The barrel was lowered and raised using cables. Lethbridge also attached a weight to it: it could be untied and lifted independently. There was enough air in the barrel for half an hour.
