Mombasa sits on a coral island connected to the mainland by bridges and ferries, with the deep natural harbour of Kilindini on its western side. This harbour has made Mombasa East Africa's busiest and most important port for centuries — handling goods not just for Kenya, but for Uganda, Rwanda, South Sudan, and beyond. Traditional Arab dhows once dominated these waters; today massive container ships do.
