Non British people who visited the UK for the first time what shocked you the most? I just got home from a three week trip to Ireland and Scotland. We were nervous for driving on the left side of the road but did okay, that is until we got to the rural roads in Ireland and later Scotland. There is absolutely no shoulder and the bushes are trimmed to the line. Anytime a vehicle bigger than a car passes you, you gulp as they go by and hope everything goes okay. We saw a machine trimming the bushes. It has an arm with a fast roller on it to trim them.
