Strategy update: I've figured out it's better to keep gathering and defending separate. Get this: any raid has a 50/50 shot for the attacker, and you can't change that. But you *can* make it harder for them by being unpredictable. You can either defend your other resource, or, like I do, just randomly choose. I have a system for gathering – lumber camp when I'm busy, food when I'm free – but I flip a coin for defense. That way, I don't give them better odds.
