Venice, Italy — One of the most improbable and beautiful cities ever built — 118 islands connected by 400 bridges, with no roads, only canals. At its medieval peak Venice was the wealthiest trading republic in Europe, controlling the spice routes between East and West. It is slowly sinking into its lagoon, making every visit feel both precious and urgent.
