Christian scripture is weaponized in the 'United States' as a spiritual-political cover to ordain power, yet three stories converge as a public ethic of breath-protection that exposes the idolatry at the heart of policies that steal breath: the Hebrew midwives Shiphrah and Puah defying Pharaoh's infanticide decree (Exodus 1:15-21), Jesus breathing the Holy Spirit onto his disciples as he sends them into the world (John 20:21-22), and the Spirit-wind at Pentecost creating a multilingual, boundary-crossing commons (Acts 2:1-4). Together, they testify that the breath of life belongs to no state, party, nor emperor, but to all of creation, beyond human and human alike.
