Set the root crown slightly higher than ground level. The secret to keeping it civilized is to cut it back shortly after it blooms. “Cut it back” means take out one third of branches starting with the thickest/oldest at the base of the plant. This stimulates new growth that will bloom on primary branches and create a spray rather than a tangled mess. This one is 50 years old.
