ITAP of a heron keeping watch beside a frozen stream. The ice is pale and quiet, beautiful in a way that also feels a little cruel. Dry reeds sway nearby, brushing the cold air with gold. The heron stands perfectly still, as if listening to the creek beneath the frozen skin. Watching it made my chest ache a little, so lovely, so pitiful, and somehow so admirable.
