Let's dive into some major actors in some major event... By the mid-1800s, the Ottoman Empire was known as the “sick man of Europe.” Russia sought to expand into Ottoman territories, claiming to defend Orthodox Christians in the region. But Britain and France feared Russian dominance would upset Europe’s delicate balance of power. In 1853, this rivalry exploded into the Crimean War a conflict fought on the Black Sea and Crimean Peninsula. What began as a struggle over influence in the collapsing Ottoman world soon became one of Europe’s first “modern wars.” The war pitted Russia against an alliance of Britain, France, the Ottoman Empire, and later Sardinia-Piedmont. It was not just about religion or borders, but about geopolitics. Britain and France were determined to block Russian expansion, while Sardinia joined to gain favor for its cause of Italian unification.
