"We need a dark mode." "Can you add a button to export to PDF?" "If only there was a calendar integration, our users would love it." If you build products, you hear these requests every day. They arrive from customer support tickets, sales calls, user forums, and executive meetings. The natural instinct is to treat them like a checklist: find a worthy request, prioritize it, assign it, build it, ship it. But this is a trap. Most feature requests are not solutions. They are symptoms of an underlying problem. A user who asks for a "PDF export button" isn't truly asking for a button. They are asking for a way to share a static, formatted record of their work with someone who doesn't have access to the tool. Building the button is easy. Solving the real problem is hard. But only one of them leads to product breakthroughs.
