This is more or less what we do in HotShot consensus, nodes need to store data for a week at most, after that they can delete it.

Mentioned this on twitter as well, but for folks interested, in Espresso we already have an implementation of data sharding that can scale to thousands of nodes built in to HotShot consensus.
