Ethnic nationalism can be effective for more reliably protecting the distinct identity & culture of a long-established nation-state, whereas civic nationalism can work better for societies looking to experiment with new ways of living that have less of a deep historical continuity to preserve. But we don’t have to pick just one approach in the same nation-state. Alternative approaches could be adopted at local and regional levels. One option is to keep ethnic nationalism at the national level for historical nations, whilst using more flexible civic nationalist systems for new and emerging societies that may become their own nation-state in the future.
