learning about permaculture (managing land in a way that is self-sustaining): “Facebook is a great resource for plants. I asked for 3 of something and get offered 20. Nature people love sharing and Facebook groups are incredible starting point to exchange value, both knowledge and actual seeds, plants, etc.”

Costa Rica... everything grows like crazy but the peaceful garden of eden can be somewhat of a war zone. Heavy rain and storms, fungus, leafcutter ant swarms, thousands of types of bugs, birds, and many different critters from deer to gigantic iguanas, will come to battle with you. We've even had gigantic carpets of thousands of caterpillars that we tried to sic our chickens on. I installed rockpiles and filled them with tarantulas for bug night patrol. Despite the challenges, we grow a lot of delicious food... herbs, fruit trees, and exotic edibles of 100+ types. And most things grow year-round so it's constantly rewarding to see what comes up. The seed-to-harvest feedback loop is fast and fun.
