Central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) could compete with stablecoins by offering government-backed digital cash. However, CBDCs may lack programmability, global interoperability, and neutrality. Stablecoins thrive by being open, composable, and global. If CBDCs restrict usage, stablecoins may survive as alternatives. CBDCs may not kill stablecoins but could shape regulation around them. The outcome depends on user trust: state-backed credibility versus market-driven flexibility.
