The Dyatlov Pass: where the line between science and the supernatural blurs. The Dyatlov Pass incident remains one of the most chilling mysteries of the 20th century. On the night of February 2, 1959, nine Russian hikers lost their lives under inexplicable circumstances in the northern Ural Mountains. The pass was later named after Igor Dyatlov, the expedition leader. All victims were students or alumni of the Ural Polytechnic Institute, skilled and experienced mountaineers. On that ill-fated journey, they set up camp on the slope of Kholat Syakhl — a name meaning “Mountain of the Dead” in the language of the indigenous Mansi people.
