Ethereum’s dominance in DeFi, holding over 55% of TVL ($50B+ in 2024), faces threats from emerging public blockchains like Solana, Avalanche, and Aptos. These rivals offer higher throughput—Solana processes 65,000 TPS versus Ethereum’s 30—and lower fees, averaging $0.01 compared to Ethereum’s $2-$10. Ethereum’s EIP-4844 upgrade (2024) boosts scalability, but adoption lags. Solana’s DeFi TVL grew 300% in 2023-2024, nearing $10B, driven by speed and developer traction. Avalanche’s subnets and Aptos’ Move language attract niche projects, eroding Ethereum’s monopoly. However, Ethereum’s first-mover advantage, robust security, and $400B market cap sustain its lead. Emerging chains must overcome network effects and decentralization trade-offs. Ethereum’s monopoly may weaken but won’t collapse soon.
