I’m not American, but living here—and calling this place home—has made me reflect on how much sacrifice is woven into the freedoms we often take for granted.
This year, I learned about the martyrs of Wallabout Bay. During the Revolutionary War, thousands of American prisoners died on British prison ships right off the coast of Brooklyn—more than in all the battles of the war combined. Cramped into horrific conditions, most never made it out. Today, there’s a monument to them in Fort Greene Park, but not many people know the story.
This 4th of July, I’m trying to remember them. And to remember that the lives of so many—often forgotten—made it possible for people like me to find opportunity, community, and a sense of belonging here.
Happy 4th of July, America! To many more! 0 reply
