i just found out that UPCs apply modular arithmetics in their validation algorithm algorithm: if d1d2 · · · d12 is a valid UPC code, then: 3 · d1 + 1 · d2 + 3 · d3 + · · · + 3 · d11 + 1 · d12 ≡ 0 (mod 10) code:
