Coding in an existing codebase, matching it's style, is like writing a book by looking for paragraphs and sentences that say roughly what you want to say, so you copy parts of them and rewrite other parts to fit your needs.
And you do that over and over and over until you can fluidly match it's style without having to look through other parts of the codebase.
Perhaps that's why some like writing from scratch over forking an existing codebase.
