A research team from the Tokyo Fire Department and the Japanese Red Cross Medical Center found that there have been many emergency calls (119 calls) for suspected acute carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning from water tobacco (shisha). Water tobacco, which is becoming more popular among young people, is prone to producing CO because tobacco leaves are heated with charcoal.
