I spent 15 days without twitter, and it was a blessing 15 days ago I decided to quit twitter, and it was refreshing. Here I will share why I did that, what changes I went through, and how you can mitigate the downsides of twitter. reasons why I quit twitter I noticed I am spending way too much time and energy scrolling my feed, without getting much in return. And I realized I alwaus subconsciously waited for notifications to come, so that I respond to them on time. Anytime I saw the blue notification icon on twitter, I couldn’t focus on anything else, I had to click on it. I couldn’t focus on posts/articles from start to finish -- in the middle of reading I would get a notification which would distract me. Spending time on CT wasn’t about mindfully reading posts and engaging in conversations anymore. Instead it was just mindless scrolling, skimming posts, and subconsciously waiting for notifications to come to respond. And I didn’t like that. This is constant waiting “anxious” state of mind was not great, and I wasn't getting much alpha on twitter, so I said, why don’t I just log out for a couple of weeks? what I got from quitting twitter After quitting I realized how much free time we have during the day without social media. After quitting, I had more time for: - thinking about ideas and concepts deeply with clarity of mind - dedicating more time for learning a new language - seeing friends more frequently - watching long form videos, reading, and even shortly playing - videogames – something I haven’t done in months or maybe years. - buying a camera, taking pics everyday, and enrolling for a photography class - This is on top of working, gym, going out, and regular day-to-day responsibilities of course. This comes not only from freed up time that I would have otherwise spent on scrolling/replying/posting, but also from the mindset change. I got rid the “waiting” mode mind state, which prevents you from being mindful, present, and deliberate, since you are constantly semi-anxious, and can’t deeply focus on anything. so instead you just scroll your feeds. Overall, quitting has been quite positive. I got more time, more clarity of mind, and have a fresher look on the whole twitter now that I am back (started noticing things that I was otherwise not paying attention to, got new ideas for posts etc) what I didn’t get from quitting twitter Interestingly, it didn’t completely remove the brainrot content and scrolling from my life. I noticed I started spending more time on my fb dummy account watching shorts, scrolling reddit, watching telegram stories etc. But in a couple of days I became more mindful of it, and started stopping myself whenever I notice I'm wasting time watching shorts or reddit tl. So partially slop timeline still found a way to stay in my life, though with much lower volume. It’s interesting how hard it is nowadays to completely stay away from useless distractions. But we have to be mindful, realize what is good for us, and what is not, and fight against the latter. ways to mitigate downsides of spending time on twitter I am maybe back to twitter again, but this time I will make sure to mitigate the downsides via these steps: 1) turning off the notifications from settings. Turning off any notification I can plus setting 2 30min timeslots a day, dedicated for checking notifications and replying. No notification checking outside of dedicated windows fixing feed. not using use “for you” feed. instead using the “following”, and integrating lists into my TL. I wrote more about fixing your timeline in this article https://x.com/FourVork/status/1955743197831028991 3) if I ever feel like I'm missing out on news, might ask grok to give crypto twitter news recap and viral posts of the day (it's shit, better use explore page), or have “20-30 minute” window a day for “for you” tab to check the news and stay in the loop. this is my journey so far, but I might do more experiments in future. let me know if you can relate to this, and I encourage you to try quiting twitter or other socials for 1-2 weeks as well. 10/10 experience.
