The headlines are screaming “Vitalik says quantum computers destroy BTC/ETH by 2028” let’s separate fact from FUD.
Vitalik actually said:
A cryptographically-relevant quantum computer running Shor’s algorithm could derive private keys from public keys → game over for ECDSA addresses.
Reality check (current tech):
Largest quantum machines ≈ 1,000–1,500 noisy qubits
Breaking 256-bit ECDSA needs millions of error-corrected logical qubits
Consensus among experts: 10–30 years away, with 2035+ being the safer bet
What stays safe:
→ SHA-256 (Bitcoin mining & hashes) only quadratic speedup from Grover, easily mitigated
What we’re doing:
Ethereum → STARKs + post-quantum sigs roadmap
Bitcoin → soft-fork proposals (OP_CAT, new opcodes, quantum-resistant signatures)
Bottom line: The threat is real enough to upgrade now, but a catastrophic break before 2030 is unlikely.
